LETTERING REMIX: CREATE CUSTOM LETTERFORMS FROM EVERYDAY INSPIRATION

In this interactive, info-packed, three-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to transform real-world inspiration—from neon signs to vintage packaging—into original hand-drawn lettering. Ken will teach you how to decode the visual systems behind found letterforms and remix them into fresh work for logos, wordmarks, personal projects, and more. You’ll sharpen your eye, expand your style, and bring new creative energy to your lettering practice.

Participants will learn:

  • How to analyze the structure, proportions, and systems behind existing letterforms

  • Techniques for extracting and remixing found inspiration into new styles

  • Practical ways to apply these methods to logos, wordmarks, and branding

  • How to refine hand-drawn lettering into client- and portfolio-ready work

  • The value of vernacular and vintage type in design history

Materials needed:

  • Pencil and/or pen and paper or tablet for sketching

  • Ruler

WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR

Ken Barber

Ken Barber is a lettering artist, type designer, educator, and author of the award-winning Lettering Manual. For over 30 years, he’s shaped visual identities with his bold, expressive letterforms—drawing inspiration from Don Martin comics, speed metal logos, and Santa Cruz skateboards.

Ken has created custom type for clients like Sandals Resorts, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Cher Show, and his work lives in the permanent collections of the Cooper Hewitt and The Henry Ford Museum. He’s currently the type director and studio letterer at House Industries and teaches at Cooper Union.
